Commandant’s Message: A New Horizon for the State Guard

To the Officers, NCOs, and Troops of the State Defense Forces:

Welcome to the SGAUS sUAS Operator (SUASO) Academy.

Today marks a pivotal moment in the evolution of the State Guard. For over a century, we have served as the shield of our states—standing ready when the waters rise, the fires burn, and our neighbors call for help. But the battlefield of disaster response is changing. The modern Incident Commander needs more than boots on the ground; they need eyes in the sky.

With the launch of the SUASO program, we are answering that call. We are transforming the “hobbyist drone pilot” into a credentialed, disciplined, and federally interoperable airman. We are giving our Governors and Adjutants General a capability that is professional, standardized, and ready to integrate seamlessly with our National Guard and FEMA partners.

This Academy did not build itself. It was forged through the tireless dedication of my Academy staff—subject matter experts who spent countless late nights translating federal regulations into military doctrine. It was built on the foundation of trust and vision provided by the SGAUS Leadership, who recognized that the future of the State Defense Force lies in specialized, high-tech capabilities.
