Introducing the SUASO, Legal, and Recruiting & Retention Academies

Fellow Service Members,

Building on the incredible momentum of our recent launch of the Medical, Chaplain, Engineer, and Communications programs, the State Guard Association of the United States (SGAUS) is proud to formally introduce the next wave of our specialized training pillars we developed over the past year.

We remain committed to the vision that dedication must be matched by capability. To that end, we are bringing three additional academies online, each designed to train our forces toward tangible credentials recognized by state and federal partners.

SUASO Drone Badge

Small Unmanned Aircraft Systems Operations (SUASO) “Drone” Academy

Commandant: Lieutenant Colonel Peter Lukevich, Washington State Guard

The SUASO Academy is the premier credentialing body for SDF operators in the air. Under Lt. Col. Lukevich’s command, this academy aligns state-level operators with Federal FEMA NIMS standards and FAA regulations.

  • Credential Goal: Training focuses on qualifying personnel for federally “typed” resources, including Technical Specialist – sUAS and sUAS Pilot (NIMS), ensuring seamless interoperability during joint response operations.

SGAUS Legal Academy Badge

Legal Academy

Commandant: Major Gerald Shields, Maryland Defense Force

In the complex landscape of emergency management, lawful authority is as critical as logistical support. Led by Major Shields, the Legal Academy curriculum is rigorously designed to align with FEMA Skillset 1019 (Legal Counseling).

  • Credential Goal: This program prepares Legal Officers to qualify for the FEMA National Incident Management System (NIMS) workforce as Legal Specialists, ensuring our units provide sound counsel on emergency declarations, procurement, and mutual aid.

SGAUS Recruiting and Retention Badge

Recruiting & Retention Academy

Commandant: Major Mitch Cochran, California State Guard

Sustainment is the lifeblood of the State Guard. Major Cochran leads an academy that moves beyond simple “headhunting” to a holistic model of force generation.

  • Credential Goal: This curriculum aligns with the “Two Sides of the Coin” philosophy, training personnel to earn the Certified Recruiting and Retention Specialist (CRRS) designation and the SDF Recruiting & Retention Badge. Graduates will be experts not just in accessing new talent, but in mentorship and family readiness to keep our ranks strong.
